Clearing, Dirt and Demolition Work in Tecumseh

We handle land clearing in Tecumseh, Oklahoma, and on the farm and ranch ground around it. Tecumseh sits in Pottawatomie County, where US-177, US-270 and State Highway 9 meet. Its ZIP code is 74873, and the town is named for the famous Shawnee chief. We work out of Ada. Tecumseh is about 37 miles northwest of our base, in a straight line. Our regular range reaches about 50 miles from Ada, and the town sits well inside it. Pontotoc County, home to Ada, borders Pottawatomie County on the south. The town was the county seat until Shawnee won that title in a 1930 election.

We clear land mechanically, with heavy equipment on every step. First the Cat D6 dozer knocks the timber down and heaps up the brush. Next, the 30,000-pound excavator gets its bucket under each stump and pulls it, root ball and all. A tracked skid steer works close to buildings and along overgrown fence lines. When county rules allow a burn, the piles are burned on site. Otherwise, the brush and stumps are hauled off. We backfill the stump holes and rough grade the cleared ground. That leaves open dirt you can seed, mow, fence or build on. Call (580) 344-7473 to have us look over your Tecumseh land, and the estimate is free.

From the 1891 run to cattle and hay

Tecumseh opened for settlement on September 23, 1891, one day after the September 22 land run. About 15,000 people crowded in for the townsite run. The townsite held 320 acres. Large oak trees of the Cross Timbers covered its western third. Its eastern two-thirds was prairie. From 1903, the Santa Fe railroad served the farms around town, where cotton was the main crop. In the 1920s, low prices and the boll weevil drove cotton down. In 1926, oil fields opened at nearby Earlsboro and St. Louis. By the 1930s, pecans and alfalfa had become important crops across the county.

USDA's 2022 Census of Agriculture found 1,553 farms in Pottawatomie County. The average farm ran 188 acres. Those farms carried 43,367 cattle and calves. They harvested hay and haylage off 42,245 acres. A hay field has to be smooth enough to cut. One stump left in the grass will catch the mower on the first pass. Our stump removal for hay meadows pulls the roots and fills every hole. Pasture lost to cedar gets the same work through our cedar removal on cattle ground. A USDA contract once had us remove cedar from 140 acres.

What does a new home site near Tecumseh need first?

Tecumseh had 4,451 residents in 1970. The count rose every decade after that, to a peak of 6,457 in 2010. The April 2020 census found about 6,300 people. Towns across the county serve as bedroom communities for the Oklahoma City metro. The city itself covers 15.3 square miles. A house on wooded acreage starts with the timber coming off the building spot. The residential building code goes a step further. Inside the foundation walls, all vegetation, topsoil and foreign material must be removed. So a stump cannot be buried under the pad.

The excavator pulls every stump inside the house site, roots included, and we backfill each hole. Next we shape rough building pads for new homes and bring them level to grade. We stop at the pad, and the slab belongs to your concrete contractor. Shops and barns get the same rough, level pad. The North Canadian, Canadian and Little rivers all drain Pottawatomie County. If the site sits in a mapped floodplain, check on a local floodplain development permit before building. On a house site, we file a locate request before we dig.

What are the burn rules for clearing land around Tecumseh?

Oklahoma DEQ's air curtain incinerator rule for clearing burns covers only the metro counties of Oklahoma City and Tulsa. DEQ's Oklahoma City list names Canadian, Cleveland, Grady, Lincoln, Logan, McClain and Oklahoma counties. Pottawatomie County is not on it, so a clearing burn here needs no air curtain incinerator under that rule. Lincoln County to the north is on the list. So are Cleveland and Oklahoma counties to the west and McClain to the south. All the other state and local burn rules still apply. State rules keep a clearing fire 500 feet or more upwind of any occupied home on someone else's land. It can only be lit between three hours after sunrise and three hours before sunset.

The county commissioners can call a burn ban lasting up to 14 days. Burning while a county ban is on counts as a misdemeanor, with fines up to $500. Inside Tecumseh city limits, the city adds a permit of its own. It costs $5 and is good for seven days. You get it through the Building Department, and the Fire Department inspects before approval. Only limbs and brush are approved for burning. Burning in town without a permit carries a $247 fine. We burn only where county rules allow it, and debris we cannot burn is hauled off.

Tecumseh FAQ

Questions From Tecumseh Property Owners

A few of the questions we hear most around Tecumseh. Don't see yours? Call us, we're happy to help.

Call (580) 344-7473

Do you work outside the Tecumseh city limits?
Yes. Rural tracts and commercial sites are the jobs we like best. Our area takes in the Pottawatomie County towns around Tecumseh, such as Brooksville, Earlsboro, Johnson, Maud, St. Louis and Tribbey. Each sits within about 14 miles of town. Measured straight from Ada, Tecumseh lies about 37 miles to the northwest.
How much is land clearing per acre near Tecumseh?
We give free estimates, and each one comes from seeing the property. As a market guide, LawnStarter published two ranges. Its figure for lightly forested land is $733 to $2,333 per acre. That climbs to $3,395 to $6,155 per acre on heavily wooded land. Timber size and the way debris gets handled decide where a tract falls.
What happens to the brush and stumps after clearing?
Stumps and brush go into piles, and we burn them where county rules allow it. Inside Tecumseh city limits, a $5 city permit comes first, and the city approves only limbs and brush. Anything we cannot burn is hauled off. We fill each stump hole and rough grade the ground for seed or a building pad.
