Rezz Built Construction Services clears land in Sulphur, Oklahoma. We are based in Ada, about 28 road miles northeast of Sulphur. The drive is roughly half an hour, southwest on State Highway 1 past Roff. That makes Sulphur one of the closest towns we work in, and our machines are near it most weeks.
Sulphur is the Murray County seat, and the whole town shares the 73086 ZIP code. It sits where US-177 meets State Highway 7, next to Chickasaw National Recreation Area. Lake of the Arbuckles lies a few miles southwest of town. The Arbuckle Mountains start right there, so the ground turns to rock fast. The biggest job on our books is a ranch near Sulphur. We have cleared more than 350 acres of it so far. Along the way we built four ponds and dug a swimming pool. We also set a storm shelter and roughed in three building pads. Southern Murray County sits in the Arbuckle Mountains region. The state historical society describes it as rolling hills and rock outcrops. Under the grass you hit limestone shelves, and granite in spots. Springs and creeks run through this country, and the park in town is built around them. A dozer blade finds that rock fast, so we look at the dirt before we quote.
Cedar is the other problem out here. Eastern redcedar spreads across rocky pasture and shades out the grass cattle need. OSU measurements put a big redcedar at as much as 42 gallons of water on a hot day. We answer that by pulling cedar out by the roots with a dozer and an excavator. We do not run a forestry mulcher. A mulcher grinds the tops and leaves the stumps in the ground. We take stumps out with a Cat D6 dozer and a 30,000-pound excavator. That leaves ground you can build on, mow, or graze.
That ranch started as cedar and brush on rough Arbuckle pasture. We cleared it in blocks, piled the debris, and burned it when the county allowed. The rest went off site on trucks. Open grass now covers ground that was thicket.
The same job put four ponds that hold water in the ground. Ponds here live or die on finding clay and dodging rock. We also dug a swimming pool and set a storm shelter for the family. Then we shaped three building pads. Each pad gets cut to grade and left concrete ready. We build pads for a slab crew to pour on, since we stop at grade. That job keeps our machines close to Sulphur most weeks. Moving a dozer costs time and fuel. When we are already in Murray County, a smaller job in town is easy to fit in.
On the night of April 27, 2024, an EF3 tornado crossed Sulphur. Winds hit 165 mph along a path nearly 10 miles long. About 72 downtown businesses were damaged or destroyed. One person was killed and around 30 more were hurt.
The town has been rebuilding since. The Chickasaw Nation put six million dollars toward downtown, and businesses have moved back into it. When a lot still needs work, we can take down a damaged structure and haul the debris off. After that we level the lot and set grade for the new slab. Rock changes how a lot drains, and Sulphur has plenty of rock. We cut drainage away from the slab so water leaves the pad. On tight downtown lots we work with the excavator and skid steer instead of the dozer. Before we dig in Sulphur, we file a locate request with OKIE811 and wait on the marks, which takes two business days. Inside the city limits, permits and applications come through Sulphur City Hall. Outside them, we check the Murray County rules first.
