Clearing, Dirt and Demolition Work in Purcell

We handle land clearing in Purcell, Oklahoma, and across the McClain County acreage around it. Purcell is the county seat, set on a bluff overlooking the Canadian River valley. The town sits 13 miles south of Norman on Interstate 35. We work out of Ada, and Purcell sits about 43 miles northwest of Ada in a straight line. That puts the town inside the roughly 50-mile circle we cover. McClain County also shares its eastern line with Pontotoc County, our home county. The land here runs from river bottoms to blackjack oak hills on the west side of the county. Horse pasture, cattle ground, hay meadows and homesites all start the same way. The trees and stumps come off first.

Our land clearing is mechanical. A Cat D6 dozer pushes the timber over. A 30,000-pound excavator then lifts each stump out of the ground with the root ball attached. A tracked skid steer handles the cleanup and the close work. Debris is piled and burned on site where the rules allow it, or hauled off. The holes get backfilled, and the ground is rough graded so you can mow, seed, fence or build on it. Nearly all of it is done in-house. We price each job after looking at the property. Clearing raw acreage near Purcell for homes and barns

McClain County grew about 21 percent in ten years, from 34,506 people in 2010 to 41,667 in April 2020. The Oklahoma Historical Society says being close to Oklahoma City and Norman has drawn residents who commute to work. Purcell itself counted 6,648 people in April 2020. When raw acreage near Purcell turns into a homesite, the trees come off the house spot first. The hilly western part of the county has long been covered in blackjack oak. Cut one at the ground and it sprouts back from the root crown. Our excavator lifts the root crown out with the stump, so there is nothing left to sprout.

A house pad needs clean ground under it. The residential building code says the ground inside the foundation walls must be stripped of vegetation and topsoil. Fill brought in has to be free of vegetation as well. A stump buried under a pad rots, and the ground above it settles. We pull every stump and backfill the holes first. Then we shape rough pads for homes and barns and bring them level. Our part ends at a rough, level pad, and your concrete crew pours the slab. A barn or shop pad gets the same stump-free start as a house.

Horse and cattle ground in the Quarterhorse Capital

Purcell goes by the nicknames Heart of Oklahoma and Quarterhorse Capital of the World. Oil and Thoroughbred horse ranching added to the town's business and farm base. Ranching in McClain County goes back to the late 1860s. In 2000, ranchers here still ran about 50,000 head of cattle, and farmers harvested 33,000 acres of hay. A stump hidden in tall grass is trouble for a hay mower and for a horse at a lope. We pull each stump out of pasture and hay ground, then fill the hole level. Grass then grows back over smooth ground.

Good horse fence starts with a clean strip of ground. We clear the fence line to dirt so the posts go in straight. A fence builder then sets the posts and wire. We take cedar off horse pasture and cattle ground with the roots attached, so grass gets the light back. Our cedar work includes a 140-acre removal job done under a USDA contract. Once the ground is open, we build stock ponds for the herd. Near Sulphur, we have cleared more than 350 acres of one ranch so far and built four ponds on it.

What rules apply when you clear land near Purcell?

The South Canadian River forms the northern border of McClain County and drains much of it. Purcell sits on a bluff above the river, with Lexington on the far bank. The southeastern arm of the county is level lowland. On bottom ground near the river, check the flood map first. The Oklahoma Water Resources Board says building in a floodplain can call for a floodplain development permit. That permit comes from the local government, so ask the city or county office that covers your land. Flat ground drains slowly, so we shape a grade that drains away from the house site.

Burning works differently here than it does around Ada. McClain County is on the state Department of Environmental Quality list of Oklahoma City metro counties. In those counties, a land clearing burn must use an air curtain incinerator. County commissioners can also pass a burn ban for up to 14 days. Breaking one is a misdemeanor with a fine up to $500. Where a burn is not allowed, the debris is hauled off. We file an OKIE811 locate request before we dig. On a hired dig, such as a utility trench, state law requires at least 48 hours of notice. Weekends, legal holidays and the day of the call do not count.
