Cedar removal is the work of pulling Eastern Red Cedar off pasture, ranch and hunting land for good. We run a Cat D6 dozer and a 30,000 pound excavator. Those machines take the whole tree out with the root ball attached. Trees get piled and burned on site where the county allows it, or hauled off your place. Cedar removal on a working place has to leave ground you can actually use. We start on the thickest cedar and work out toward the clean grass. The dozer pushes trees into piles with the dirt shaken off the roots. The excavator handles trees close to fences, ponds and structures where a dozer is too much machine. Burn piles get set where the smoke and heat stay clear of anything standing. Once the wood is gone we smooth the scars so a shredder can run over the ground. Eastern Red Cedar is native here, so it is not a tree somebody imported. It once held to rocky bluffs and creek breaks where grass fire could not reach. When regular burning stopped, cedar spread out across open range. Birds eat the berries and drop seed wherever they perch. Fence rows fill first, which is why clearing cedar off a fence line often comes first on a place. Ada sits in Cross Timbers country, and state estimates put cedar on roughly eight million acres of Oklahoma rangeland.
A thick cedar stand shades out the grass under it. Forage drops as the canopy closes, and heavy cover can wipe out grass production on that ground. Cedar burns hot because the foliage carries volatile oils and starts down at ground level. Oklahoma State Extension lists it as a hazardous fuel that throws embers downwind and starts spot fires. Quail lose the weeds and open nesting cover they need to raise a brood.
We size the machine to the tree and the ground. Rock and old fence wire slow a job down, so we look for both first. The D6 dozer pushes through heavy cedar on open range and rolls the root ball up with the trunk. The excavator picks trees out one at a time near ponds, fences and buildings. Piles go up as we clear, then burn on site where the county allows it. On places where burning is off the table, the wood gets loaded and hauled.
Cedar does not sprout back from a cut stump. Extension guidance is plain about the rule. The cut has to land below the lowest green limb, and the tree dies. Cut above that limb and it keeps growing. Mulching grinds the top and leaves the stump and root in the ground. That stump still stops a shredder and sits under any building pad. So we pull it, then follow with grading and leveling where the ground needs it. Mulched cedar is its own problem. The chips break down slowly and burn hot, so a mulched stand carries a fire load long after the trees are dead.
Grass comes back fast once the canopy is gone and sunlight hits the dirt again. Ranchers clear cedar to get stocking capacity back on ground that quit carrying cattle. Water is the other reason. Oklahoma State researchers measured cedar water use with sap flow gauges. The average came in near 6 gallons a day per tree. A big tree on a hot day with wet soil ran much higher, up to about 42 gallons.
Hunting ground changes too. Quail need weeds and open nesting cover, and a closed cedar canopy takes both away. Cedar near a house or barn is a fire problem. The foliage starts at ground level and carries oils that light easily. Pulling those trees back opens a buffer around what you want to keep standing.
