Stumps and root balls out of the ground for good

Stump removal is the job of getting a stump and its roots out of the ground for good. We do it with machines. A 30,000 pound excavator lifts the stump with the root ball attached. On open ground the Cat D6 dozer pushes stumps out and rolls them into a pile. Our tree stump removal work runs on pasture, fence lines, lanes, homesites and build pads. That takes in stumps left by forestry mulching, stumps from storms and old stumps from past cutting. Dirt gets shaken off the roots before anything is piled.

Root removal matters more on acreage than it does in a mowed yard. A stump left in a pasture stops a shredder and can sprout back. A stump under a building pad has to come out before a slab goes down. Most stump work rides along with clearing timber off raw acreage. We run out of Ada and cover about a 50 mile circle around town. That takes in Sulphur, Stratford, Seminole, Pauls Valley, Holdenville and Ardmore. Stump pulling gets priced off what the ground shows us, so we look first. Stump removal or stump grinding: which does your ground need?

Stump grinding and stump removal are two different tools. A grinder shaves the stump below the surface and leaves the root system in the dirt. Homewyse puts grinding a large stump at $173 to $307 in its 2026 figures. That work goes to at least 5 inches below ground level. Fixr puts stump removal at $200 to $700, with about $380 for a 24 inch stump. For one stump in a mowed lawn, a grinder is the cheaper tool. Our work is acreage, pasture, fence lines, lanes, homesites and build pads.

Post oak and blackjack oak dominate the Cross Timbers woodland across central Oklahoma. The USDA Forest Service reports post oaks up to 10 inches across sprout after being cut. Blackjack oak sprouts from the root crown once it is cut, so shaved stumps come back. Eastern red cedar works the other way. OSU Extension reports cedar lacks basal buds and does not resprout. Cut below the lowest green limb, a cedar stays dead. The Oklahoma Residential Code calls for vegetation, top soil and foreign material out of the foundation footprint. That is why ground prepped for a new build starts with stump work.

What does excavator stump removal look like on your property?

We start with a locate. Oklahoma law requires notice to OKIE811 at least 48 hours before digging. That count skips the day of the call, weekends and legal holidays. The ticket then runs 14 calendar days. Roots wrap around water lines, gas lines and old electric runs. Once the ground is marked, the excavator sets its bucket behind the stump and lifts. The root ball comes up with it. The dozer takes open ground, where it pushes stumps out and rolls them into a pile. The same 30,000 pound machine digs our storm shelter and pool pits.

Stumps get piled and burned on site where county rules allow it, or hauled off. DEQ lists land clearing among the burns it allows, with extra rules inside the Oklahoma City and Tulsa metro counties. The pile sits at least 500 feet upwind of an occupied home off the property. Ignition runs from three hours after sunrise to three hours before sunset. A county burn ban stops it, so plans move with the weather. Holes get backfilled with the dirt shaken off the roots, then packed down. Last comes a rough grade so a mower runs over it. Tighter jobs get a smooth pass with the blade.

Stumps left behind by forestry mulching

A forestry mulcher cuts the top of a tree into chips and leaves the stump. The roots stay in the ground and the chips build a mat over everything. Stumps that take too long to chew up get buried under the mat. You end up with hidden stumps under a floor of mulch. A dozer in high gear catches one and stops cold. Cedar chips make it worse. OSU Extension calls eastern red cedar a volatile fuel that burns fast and hot. Cleaning that up runs with how we take cedar out.

Cleanup means going back over the ground with the excavator and the dozer. We find the buried stumps, lift them with the root ball and shake the dirt off. The mat gets raked into piles with the stumps. A bed of cedar chips does not break down quickly, and it is a fire hazard. The second trip pays when the ground has a job to do. Fencing, a pad, a lane or a hay meadow all need the stumps gone. That is why brush out of a fence row gets cleared down to dirt.

Call (580) 344-7473

What drives the cost of stump removal?
Size, root spread, machine access, the number of stumps, and what happens to them after they come out. Fixr puts stump removal at $200 to $700 nationally, with about $380 for a 24 inch stump. LawnStarter puts root system removal at $100 to $185 per hour. Our estimate is free.
Is it cheaper to grind or remove a stump?
For one stump in a mowed lawn, grinding is cheaper. Homewyse puts grinding a large stump at $173 to $307 in 2026. That price shaves it to at least 5 inches below ground. Fixr puts removal at $200 to $700. On acreage the roots have to come out.
Will the tree grow back after the stump is out?
No. Post oak and blackjack oak sprout from the root crown after cutting. That is why cut stumps send up new stems. Taking the root ball out ends it. OSU Extension reports eastern red cedar lacks basal buds and does not resprout. A cut below the lowest green limb kills it.
What happens to the stumps you pull out?
They get piled and burned on site where county rules allow it, or hauled off. DEQ puts land clearing burns at least 500 feet upwind of an occupied home off the property. Ignition runs from three hours after sunrise to three hours before sunset. A burn ban stops it.
Can you build on ground that still has stumps in it?
No. The Oklahoma Residential Code calls for all vegetation, top soil and foreign material out of the foundation footprint. Fill then goes back in compacted lifts. Stumps and root wads count as organic material, so they come out before we rough in a pad.
Do you call 811 before pulling stumps?
Yes. Oklahoma law requires notice to OKIE811 at least 48 hours before excavation. The count skips the day of the call, weekends and legal holidays, and the ticket runs 14 calendar days. Roots grow around water, gas and electric lines, so the locate comes first.
