Land clearing in Shawnee usually means one of two jobs. Either brush and cedar have swallowed pasture that used to graze cattle. Or a piece of raw ground has to become a home site. Pottawatomie County held 346,137 acres in farms in the 2017 USDA Census of Agriculture. Pastureland was 55 percent of that, and woodland another 17 percent. Livestock and poultry drove 78 percent of the county's farm sales. That is why cedar is the call we get most often around Shawnee. Storm damage is part of the picture here. On April 19, 2023, an EF2 tornado tracked 15.5 miles across the area. Winds hit 130 to 135 mph, and the damage path reached 2,300 yards wide. It started southeast of Bethel Acres at 9:39 p.m. and ended in Lincoln County. Three more tornadoes crossed Pottawatomie County that same night, including an EF3 south of Pink. Oklahoma Baptist University took the worst damage in its 113-year history.
Downed trees and split trunks come out with the excavator, root balls included. Inside Shawnee city limits, open burning takes a permit from the Shawnee Fire Department. You call (405) 273-2122 before lighting. Outside the limits, county rules apply, and commissioners can put a burn ban in place for up to 14 days.
