Pittsburg County is hilly ground, and it turns mountainous down in the southeast corner. Sandstone hills cover the north and west, and the timber runs heavy to oak and hickory. Head east on US 270 through Krebs, Alderson and Hartshorne, and the woods close in fast. Jackfork Mountain, southeast of McAlester, stands about 1,578 feet, so rock in the cut is normal.
Thick timber means big root balls, and big root balls mean big piles to deal with. The dozer pushes the trees over, and the excavator lifts the stumps out with the roots. We windrow the debris where you want it, then burn it on site or haul it off. On the steeper places we take smaller bites and keep the topsoil on the hill. Once the trees are down, the ground almost always needs shaping. We do heavy dirt work, grading and leveling, excavation, and demolition on the same trip. We dig a stock pond where the draw and the dirt will hold water. We rough in pads leveled to grade and leave them ready for the concrete crew. We have cleared more than 350 acres on one ranch project near Sulphur, and it is still going. On that place we built four ponds and dug a swimming pool. Burning inside McAlester city limits takes a permit from the city. The fee runs $25 for a small pile and $50 for a large burn. The fire department inspects the site before the permit is granted. Out on county land, the question is whether Pittsburg County is under a burn ban.
County commissioners set those bans, and a ban can run up to 14 days at a time. They extend it when dry weather holds. Burning during a county ban is a misdemeanor in Oklahoma, with a fine up to $500. So we plan the debris two ways, and haul it off when the pile cannot be lit.
